 class is a great place to start if you’re new to barre workouts. In Beginner's Barre, our teachers take the time to break down each movement and the technique required to execute the movements safely and effectively. We always recommend people to try Beginner's Barre first, as it's a great foundation class.

 is also a lovely class to attend when you’re new, as the classes move slowly and mindfully, with an equal focus on mobility.

If you’re new but love a strong workout, all classes welcome newcomers. Classes are simple to follow, and the more you attend, the more you learn. Come as you are.

The Barre Base studio is located at 7 Crawford Street, in the Victoria Chambers building on the Dunedin one-way system. This is just opposite Consultancy House. Walk up the first flight of stairs, and our studio will be the first space you see. There are plenty of places to park around the studio.

Anything comfortable! Members wear fitness leggings or track pants – whatever allows them to move freely and confidently. No footwear is permitted, but feel free to wear Pilates grippy socks, or just enjoy being barefoot.

If you own a yoga mat, please bring one. If not, you can borrow our studio mats. Sweat towels and water bottles are also encouraged.

Typically, barre workouts are fiery strength-based workouts that focus on moving with strength, length and grace. The big misconception is that they're a dance class – instead, the classes focus on body-weight strengthening exercises that dancers would do to gain better strength.

This concept has been transformed into the fitness world and has empowered non-dancers to benefit from this practice too. The barre allows us to feel more stable and in control while working toward moving with good posture and alignment.

Absolutely, yes! A great barre studio will offer different classes to cater to beginners and those who are looking to be challenged. Barre is a low-impact exercise but truly packs a punch. We have members from all walks of life – busy mums, musicians, rugby players (men and women), to older clients who want to keep maintain their youthful energy and strength.

Barre Base was founded in Dunedin in 2015. Alongside our classic barre classes, we offer yoga, Mat Pilates and mobility sessions, so our members can move their bodies in a holistic and balanced throughout the week.

My goal is to inspire people to move with strength and freedom—both physically and beyond. This has been a great success, with members joining us from all over the world. Our First-Timer deal is a four-week unlimited pass for new students only. This pass costs $65 and allows you to attend as many classes as you wish across four weeks to find your feet at the studio. This pass must be bought on your first visit. The four-week period starts from your first class attendance, not the date you purchase the pass.

If a spot becomes available, you will receive an email notification automatically. Please confirm your attendance via the link provided in the email. If you cannot attend, no further action is required.

Doors open 15 minutes before your class starts. If you’re new, it’s important to be on time so that we can show you around our space and settle you in. Please come up to the desk and introduce yourself, and our team will happily show you around. For security purposes, the building doors will automatically unlock 15 minutes before your session, and lock once the class starts. If you’re late, you won’t be able to get inside the building for your session. Therefore, please ensure you’re on time.

You’re welcome to cancel any booking made via Punchpass at least 8 hours before the session starts. If you don’t show up for a class or need to cancel within the 8-hour window, a $15 fee will apply. This policy helps us protect our business and ensures other clients have the chance to attend fully booked classes.

Yes! We welcome pregnant members in many of our classes. Please let the instructor know you are pregnant so they can provide appropriate modifications.

Please remove your shoes outside and carry them into the changing rooms.

We kindly ask that phones are on silent and left in the changing room. Our yoga mats are a phone-free zone.

All personal belongings should stay in the changing room, with only water bottles allowed on the mat.

We love to encourage conversation before and after classes—it’s a great way to connect with those around you. However, once class begins, we ask that you minimise talking. Our classes are an opportunity to tune into your body and fully immerse yourself in the experience, so chatting during class is discouraged.
