What is a 'Barre' workout?
Barre, as a workout, is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. The benefits of the barre are endless, and all ages and stages are reaping the rewards of this workout method.
Barre fuses elements of ballet barre (French for 'bar') conditioning exercises with pilates, yoga and functional, body-weight training. Although the classes are based in dance movement, dance experience isn't a necessity to take part in the classes at all. Each person can be challenged at his or her own level in class without affecting anyone else’s workout. The moves are low impact, but include high intensity intervals, body-weight strength work, followed by effective stretching which functions as your recovery.

Increased core strength
Your ‘core’ is more than just your 6-pack. Rather, your core includes at least twenty-nine muscles, and many simple dance conditioning and bodyweight exercises can be used to engage all of them. The benefits of improved core strength transfers to help better ones posture, and improves strength gains throughout the entire body, improving athletic performance across all sports. Therefore, it is a transferable exercise for any other sports or recreational activity that you may have an interest in.
Hard on muscles, kind on joints
The controlled, body-weight focused exercises within the class increase muscle endurance and stability, which in turn reduces pressure on your joints, tendons, ligaments and spine. Thus, the class is suitable for all ages and stages.
Our barre workouts are designed to target the large muscle groups in the body and effectively burn more calories by doing so! By working these groups, lean muscle will be gained which in turn increases your resting metabolic rate. This means your body will continue to burn calories even once you’ve finished your workout. Alongside weight loss, barre classes will make your body feel long and lean, just like a dancer’s. The combination of barre classes and a healthy diet will give you optimum results for a dancer’s physique.
Barre training is a great way to enhance your flexibility while also significantly improving strength. Improved flexibility, and having a full range-of-motion, ensures that joints are moving freely, which can lead to improved posture, and might even reduce the chance of exercise-related injury.
Improved body awareness and posture
Good posture and body awareness involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on your supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities. These weight-bearing activities may include gardening, playing with your children or hanging up the washing. Therefore, the benefits of having better body awareness and coordination extend into all elements of your everyday life.
Correct posture keeps your bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. Building the muscles that supports your bones and joints prevents backache and muscular pain and decreases abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis. And more simply, when you stand up straight, you appear and feel more confident!
No experience is required
Everyone is at a different starting point in their fitness journey, and at Barre base we recognise that. Our tracks are simple to follow, and repetitive, making it easy for newbies to pick up the movements, and to feel the benefits fairly quickly! Each person can be challenged at their own level in class without affecting anyone else’s workout. At Barre Base we also offer a Beginners Barre class, which takes a slow and steady approach to the barre method.
Motivating and fun
At Barre Base, every class is different! We exercise to music, which helps distract us from our muscles 'burning', and keeps us motivated to push to the finish! You will be so surprised at how quickly time flies at Barre Base.
