Barre - Not just for dancers
By Rosa Anderson - Jones
At Barre Base we don't wear leotards, and pointe shoes. We wear sports clothes and bare feet, just like a yoga or pilates class.
Barre Base uses the conditioning exercises that dancers also use to train for their routines. The classes include body-weight strengthening exercises like lunges, and plies (a dancers squat), calf raises, press ups, and core work. Throughout the class, we aim to strengthen and stretch the entire body to ensure that we are not neglecting any one part of it, all whilst working to employ the posture and body-awareness of a dancer.
Our classes attract all sorts of people; from young teenagers, to athletes who are struggling to keep flexible and mobile, to desk-sitters, and to older clients who understand the importance of moving in the later years of life.
Paul is one of our active members, who enjoys surfing and keeping physically fit. Here is what he has to say about Barre Base.
'I started doing Barre Base because I was sick of being kept out of the surf by injuries and back pain sustained in more traditional style gym classes. Over the four or so months I’ve been doing the classes, it's been a completely different story. I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my core strength, I’m more flexible and even my balance is better' - Paul Hankinson, 53
Remember, there are no prerequisites to come along to a barre class at Barre Base. There are no pirouettes, or fancy dance movements in the class. Our movements are simple, yet effective, so anyone and everyone can feel the benefits of barre.
